The name, the face, the girl behind the label but who is TULLY LOU..? We see she has abs of steel, can bend herself inside out but who is the person behind all of that and what’s her story? She’s a daughter, a sister, a warrior, girl boss and has a heart of of gold. From defeating anorexia, the journey of self discovery through yoga, creating a fashion label and an inspiring mission to help others we sat down with the boss to find out more about her personal story – because everyone has a story.
The girl behind the label TULLY LOU is designer and creative director Tully Humphrey and we sat down with Tully to find out more about her personal journey, to share the story behind the brand and to find out a few little things that may surprise you.
Who is Tully Humphrey and what’s the story so far?
Happy, sad, lonely, lost, defeated, loved, inspired, amazing, brilliant + Fu&cking outstanding! OK I don’t know why but all those words just literally came to me and they are a big part of my 26 years.
I grew up a normal, happy, energetic child with an amazing and supportive family and friends, however it wasn’t until I was about 14 years old when I started feeling lost + depressed with myself and the world. I felt like I lost my identity in high school and the only thing I could do was control the way I ate.
I got diagnosed with anorexia had to quit school to recover under the watchful eye of my family. I was a stubborn little shit and refused to go to the hospital! The recovery time at home was lonely and scary.. there were days there where I would try and cut myself and questioned why I was on earth? I didn’t know if I was ever going to be normal again? Fights with my family, self harm, excessive exercise + depression was starting to feel normal for me.
I found yoga at around 15 – 16 years that really helped me on my recovery path, it was the only time that I actually learnt to love myself again + really woke me up to what I was doing to myself.. I didn’t want to live the way I was, I wanted to get better and also wanted to help woman who were in the same situation.. I wasn’t sure how I was going to do this but I knew I would.
Whilst doing a yoga class one day I looked around the room and everyone was in black including myself.. I thought wow that is so depressing, black doesn’t make you feel happy or inspired to work out! From that day onwards I knew I wanted to be my own boss… and create a brand that would make you feel good whilst working out.. a brand that inspires you to go and work out!
I also wanted to learn more about YOGA. I really wanted to pass on the yoga how it was passed onto me.. to recovery. So I also became a yoga teacher.
What advice would give to help others in a similar situation who may be struggling?
My advice would be to really look within yourself and find the love again. If it is through yoga, meditation, mantras or even just getting in touch with someone like myself who has been in it.. stuck in their own shit.
Who inspires you – personally, creatively and spiritually?
PERSONALLY – family + friends + students + customers. If it wasn’t for all of you guys I literally would not be sitting here now typing this interview away. You all inspire me in so many ways and I continue to be blown away with you all.
CREATIVELY – Alexander Wang From the materials to the colors and patterns. He is a designing genius.
SPIRITUALLY – Gabrielle Bernestein – I am a massive fan. A modern day spirit junkie.
What makes you most proud about the TULLY LOU brand?
The thing I am most proud of is definitely being able to inspire people to move, sweat and live happier and healthier lives. Just being a small part of that platform for them to feel good about themselves, who they are and just rocking it – I love.
But I’m also really proud about what we have provided for our staff members in Bali. I make sure that they are all paid above ward wages. I have helped them build houses for their families, provided clean drinking water + some also have started their own businesses with what we have paid them and that is also very humbling.
What’s your health philosophy and how has it changed over the years?
My health philosophy is “EAT REAL FOOD”
Lots of fresh greens, juices, fruits, nuts, seeds, etc. Everything in moderation.
Food used to rule my life for a long time. I would control every food situation and everything that would go into my mouth now I am like.. no way don’t let food rule your life, its healthy and good to treat yourself now and again. Lets use food to help heal your body.
Who inspires you to be healthy?
People I work with if its at TULLY LOU or the Yoga studios. They are gentle reminders to me of how to be healthy and not getting stuck back into the obsessive eating disorder patterns again.
What’s a typical day look like for Tully Humphrey?
Start the day off around 5:30/6:30 with large glass hot water and lemon to kick start the metabolism and some sort of excercise like yoga, running, spin or pilates to get me pumped for the day. If I don’t start with something physical I can’t function throughout the day.
Work life is emails, designing, team meetings, checking up with production in our offices overseas, social media checks and updates it’s so important to be all over the social media side of TL I really enjoy to see what our customers are doing and loving. My days vary some days I end with teaching a yoga class or I’ll go and practice a vinyasa class to help me wind down from the day.
Then it’s a big healthy dinner and I’m also trying really hard to cut off work at night but with international customers and work it gets hard sometimes. Top it all off with a giant cup of tea and some meditation before bed. I write down 3 things I was grateful for that day and then it’s bed time.
Name 3 things that may surprise us and other Tully Lou girls?
- I drink alcohol haha – so funny how many people say to me “Omg I didn’t know you drink?” – Yes I do like to let loose every now and then… I am only human 😉
- I grew up in the country + didn’t finish school I quit school in the middle of year 10 and never went back.
- I swear……. a lot.
One thing you can’t live without?
I love this “My body is healthy; my mind is brilliant, my soul is tranquil”
