You may have heard of it but it seems to be all the rage amongst the hip and healthy at the moment ‘floating’. People say they’ve completely been transported somewhere else and that it’s like no other feeling so of course we have to go and see what all the fuss is about.
‘Going floating’ is being in a floatation tank that is loaded with epsom salts so much so that you are always buoyant, weightless, every muscle and joint is relaxed just like being in the Dead Sea. All external sounds are blocked out which makes it the perfect place to refine your meditation. The water and air is heated to body temperature so you can’t tell the difference between where the air and water starts and there is your floating feeling.
It was created by neurophysicist Dr. John C Lilly 60 years ago doing research on brain waves and altered states of consciousness.
We’re no experts on the situation but there have been several studies on the benefits of floating and the reduction in pain and stress levels.
Some other benefits of floating are;
- Recover quicker from injury and training – decreased lactic acid, cortisol levels
- Improved sleep
- Reduced stress levels
- Enhanced body awareness
- Boost immunity
It was definitely an experience – we found ourselves asleep, in a deep meditation but also bored and making water angels at some stage. The floating sensation is great, a weird feeling and definitely did sleep well that night. No transportation to another place but will definitely be back and looking forward to another float.
